The primary purpose here is to introduce as many  people as possible to the work of theologian, Paul Tillich. Dr. Tillich appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in March of 1959. It seems few theologians are well known today, still it is surprising how few people recognize the name, let alone have a sense of his interpretations of Christian message.

If “Christian message” is not your thing, don’t click way. What may be of interest is the formal structure of the Systematic Theology,  in which Tillich “developed his method of correlation, an approach of exploring the symbols of Christian revelation as answers to the problems of human existence raised by contemporary existential philosophical analysis.” (Wikipedia quote)

One of Dr. Tillich’s earliest publications, The System of Knowledge According to Objects and Methods, is an attempt to place the “science” of theology within a larger system of all knowledge. From the Translator’s Introduction to this essay:

“But Tillich does not construct his system for purely philosophical reasons. He is primarily a theologian. His motive for formulating a scheme is to find a place for theology within the total framework of the sciences so that he will have a foundation for theological work. Christian theologians before him—Origen, Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Schleiermacher, for example—were also concerned, in one way or another with the placement of theology. Unlike most of them, Tillich writes on the subject, and he constructs a complete system of his own rather adapting one already at hand. “
